A good crowd was present last Wednesday for the annual Yamburgan Shorthorn Bull Sale. A total of 50 bulls sold from 58 offered to average $4,850.

The top priced bull, Yamburgan Lockyer C30 sold for $10,000 to the Brownlie Family, Deepwater, Meandarra, Qld. Lockyer C30 was in the top 10% of the breed for 200 and 400 day growth, EMA and rib fat.

Mr Brownlie said “He is a very balanced bull with excellent weight for age and muscle expression.”

In total the Brownlies purchased 7 bulls to average $7,000, also purchasing the equal second priced bull Yamburgan Aladdin D13 for $9,000 and the Brisbane Grand Champion Bull Yamburgan Aladdin D6 for $6,000.

The Brownlie family consisting of John, Carol and their sons, Stuart and Tom purchased their first Yamburgan bull in 1996 and said “We have always been very happy with the performance of the Yamburgan cattle”.

The next top price of $9,000 was for lot 10 Yamburgan Lockyer C8, selling to the Munro family, “Weebollabolla” Moree. The massive 1056kg, 25 month old bull with a 137 sq cm eye muscle will go straight into the Weebollabolla stud based a Boonal Boggabilla. Also at $9,000 was Lot 15 Yamburgan Aladdin D8 selling to Harry Lauire and his daughter Alison Cameron, Glenall stud Walcha.

Rob Cropper, Greenhills Willow Tree returned again purchasing 4 bulls to average $5,625, topping at $7,000 for Lot 3 Yamburgan Coolabah C18. Mr Cropper said “we are now a pure Yamburgan blood shorthorn herd, I’ve been buying here for 14 years. We sold a line of our steers to Swifts Caroona feedlot on Thursday with the buyer describing them as some of the best performing steers they have ever had.”

Other buyers travelled from Gympie Queensland, with George and Lyn Cotter buying lot 34 for $3,500 to go into their successful steer cross breeding program, the Grills family “Waverly” Guyra purchasing 3 bulls to average $4,666. Evan Flint, Kingston South Australia purchasing Lot 12 Yamburgan Masterpiece C82 for $6,000, Robbie Jones, “Barellan” Clermont purchased a low birthweight bull in Lot 61, Yamburgan Coolabah C109 for $4,000.

This year the sale again had extremely high repeat buying competition with over 85% repeat buyers, reflecting the quality of the bulls on offer and the

Manchee family’s strong commercial focus. The sale was conducted by Landmark and Elders, with Paul Dooley the auctioneer.

2007

The Yamburgan sale achieved an on-property top price record of $19,000 for lot 5 Yamburgan Lockyer 13th. He was purchased by the Ridley Family from Condobolin for use in the families stud operations. Lockyer 13th weighed 994kg at 24 months of age with a 133 sq/cm EMA and fat measurements of 17/11. He was from the first line of The Grove Lockyer sons to be offered which averaged $6,810.

The sale was very strong with the second top priced bull selling to AJ Starling, Kingstown, for $12,000. The bull, Yamburgan Lockyer 15th (Lot 7) weighed 952kg at 24 months and had an EMA of 128 sq/cm and a daily weight gain of 1.27.

There were two bulls selling for $10,000 with the first, Yamburgan Lockyer 2nd, going to Peter & Jody Bullen, Baan Baa. He had an EMA of 131 sq/cm, weight of 1022 kg and a daily weight gain of 1.34 at 24 months. The second $10,000 bull sold to Bill Gordon, Condobolin, and was paddock prepared on forage oats and weighed 884 kg, had an EMA of 125 sq/cm at 24 months.

Bulk purchasers were Clyde Ag, buying 8 bulls for 'Oxley Station', Warren, Lynoch Pty Ltd, Armidale, purchased 6 bulls and the Counsell Family, Barcaldine, took home 6 bulls.

Overall the sale had a 100% clearance with an average of $5,656 and 86% of bulls were sold to repeat clients. We would like to thank all buyers, bidders, agents and friends for a successful sale.

2006

Yamburgan Shorthorn Stud's annual bull sale returned a strong result with 52 bulls selling to a top of $11,000 and an average of $5,567.

John and Liz Manchee, Narrabri were rapt with the result at their 11th annual on property sale with a 100% clearance.

The top priced bull was sold to Rolly and David Green, Ben Lomand, north of Guyra. They took home the 24 month old 982 kg bull Yamburgan Mort, by Moreton Bay 0047. The deep bodied bull featured good spring of rib and bone and a good balance of growth.

The sales volume buyer was Clyde Agriculture, Oxley Station, Warren.

Peter Bullen, Boggabri, bought 5 bulls to average $6,100 and a top of $10,000 for the 24 month old 880 kg polled bull, Yamburgan Mittiebah 22nd, by Weebollabolla Theodore.

Rob and Camilla Cropper, Willow Tree, bought three bulls to a top of $6,500 and an average of $5,833.

Jim and Pam Smith, Amberflow Shorthorns, Dalrymple Heights, Qld, bought 28 month old Yamburgan Mittiebah, another Theodore son for $10,000 while Lennox Waugh, Gunnedah, paid the same money for a Yamburgan Diamantina 3rd son, which exhibited a GeneSTAR of a maximum of 8 for tenderness.

Principle, John Manchee, was "extremely happy" with the sale result with more than 90% of bulls went to repeat clients including two families who have been supporting the stud since it was established in 1947.

"The draft really displayed the direction were trying to take, breeding easy maintenance, efficient, muscular Shorthorns." Mr Manchee said.

"The buyers were certainly leaning towards low birth weight cattle that would put plenty of condition into their calves."

2005

Yamburgan bulls sold to a top of $14,500 and averaged $5020 for the 50 bulls offered.

Our motto has been "low birth weight and easy fleshing cattle" and with a repeat client rate of 94% we are continuing to supply cattle that are in demand. Bulls sired by Yamburgan Mittiebah 3rd sold particularly well with eight bulls selling to a top of $10,000 and averaging $6,438.

David Hurst, 'Lake Hawdon', near Robe, South Australia, paid top price of $14,500 for Yamburgan Dazzling (P), a 24 month old, 1002 kg bull by Yamburgan Thorp 2nd (P).

The Flint family of South Bundara Poll Shorthorn stud, Kingston, South Australia, purchased the sales second top priced bull Yamburgan Coolibah 4th for $10,000.

Volume buyer WR Carpenter Agriculture, Perth, bought six bulls to average $2917.

2004

Records went out the window at this years on property bull sale, with a new top price and overall sale average setting new marks.

In a total clearance, 58 bulls were offered and sold to a top of $17,000 and averaging $5,284.

Mr Bob Adam, advisor to the Simpson Family, "Woodcone", Mt Compass, SA, successfully bid $17,000 for lot 7, Yamburgan Dazzler 14th (pictured below). An ET son of Marellan Super Dazzler x Yamburgan Mayflower 187th. Dazzler 14th weighed 946 kg at 24 months with an EMA scan of 124 sq cm.

Volume buyer was the Coventry family, Lynoch Pty Ltd, Armidale, NSW, with the purchase of six bulls at an average of $6,333 after paying to a top of $7,000 for a very muscular son of the Canadian sire Eionmor Port o' Call.

John Kempton, "The Meadows", Glen Innes, NSW, also purchased a very soft roan Port o' Call son for $7,000.

From Uralla, NSW, Jack Mitchell purchased bulls at $6,500 while the Graham family, "Merrifield" paid $5,500 for a 2 year old son of Weebollabolla Thoedore, weighing 932 kg.

Anthony Grills and family, Guyra, NSW, selected bulls at $8,500 and $4,000, while long time Yamburgan supporter, Bob Anderson, "Garrawilla", Mullaley, NSW, paid $7,500 for a very stylish son of Royalla Ziegfeld.

Two of Yamburgans longest clients, Roger McDowell and John Hindle both purchased bulls, with Roger paying $9,000 for a Yamburgan Clyde 4th son and the Hindles with three bulls to average $3,333.
