Our Breeding Philosophy

Our goal has always been to look to the future and not short term gain.

To do this our focus has always been the commercial reality of cattle breeding.

We breed easy doing, fertile, naturally muscled cattle that haven't been pampered - no compromise.

 

Never has a breed of cattle made such an impact in so short a time as has the Santa Gertrudis breed on the beef herds of Australia. Santa Gertrudis bulls, when mated to cows of other breeds, have consistently sired calves that weigh from 22 to 28 Kg’s more at weaning. This, combined with the high daily weight gains and feed efficiency the Santa Gertrudis are renowned for, means there are more dollars in producers pockets that utilise the Santa Gertrudis breed.

The Santa cows make great mothers, they have the qualities of ease of calving, good milkers and have long productive, fertile lives. Another important attribute is their salvage value. The producer can expect a premium price for older cows compared to other breeds. We have received over $1000 per female, on numerous occasions, for cows that were 10 years of age and calved every year from 2 years of age.
PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY!
 

We strive to breed structurally correct cattle with length, muscle and maintain high fertility in our females. We are currently researching the eating quality of our herd by implementing the use of GeneSTAR DNA marker technology to identify traits such as meat tenderness and marbling. We won the LJ Hooker Beef Taste Test at the Brisbane Royal Agriculture Show in 2004 from a strong line up with all major breeds represented.
