Steer trials are an integral part of our business. We have been entering steer competitions since the early 1990's.
Steer Trials
Each year Manchee ag participates in as many steer competitions as possible to enable us to benchmark ourselves against other industry leading beef producers.

This pen of Durham Tropicals were placed 3rd overall for weight gain and first for MSA Meat Eating Quality.
Beef Spec 2011 Win
Yamburgan were Reserve Champion pen of steers in the 2011 Beef Spectacular Feedlot Trial held at Dubbo with a purebred pen of Shorthorn steers. Manchee Ag entered two pen's of steers in the competition and were also placed 1st and 3rd in feedlot performance. The reserve champion pen of milk tooth steers were the most profitable pen of steers in the competition being $545.87 more profitable than the trails average and $1,200 more profitable than the worst performing pen. This fact alone describes our main goal. The Yamburgan steers also had the highest dressing percentage of the trial with steers dressing out at over 61%. Saleable meat yield (ViaScan%) was another strong area with the steers also topping this section at over 71%. Congratulations to Jonathon Wright, Coota Park Blue E for winning the competition with his Blue E Shorthorn X Angus steers. Jonathom has purchased heifers from Yamburgan for use in the Blue E program.

2011 RAS Trial
This year saw the introduction of the inaugural RAS Australian Prime Beef Cattle Challenge, an exciting new commercially oriented steer competition. Yamburgan entered one pen of purebred Shorthorn steers which had done very well when we attended the recent field day at the Wilga Feedlot at Bellata. We were really pleased with how even the steers were. They had an average DWG of 2.11 kg/day. The judging facets of the 100 day Export Class are:

Beef Spec '10
This year at the NSW Beef Spectacular saw the introduction of a Feedback Feedlot Trial. The trial included 43 teams (215 head)from 34 vendors representing 13 breeds or crosses that were fed on a 112 day feed regime. Yamburgan Steers were the top performing Shorthorn steers with a return of over 300% profitability and placed 6th overall. We were awarded the Shorthorn Beef Sponsorship prize of $1500 for the highest performing Shorthorn steers in the trial. We thank Shorthorn Beef for this prize money. Our steers were also the top performing team in Cargill's Excel branded beef. This is one of the premium brands of beef without an Angus content. The leading steer in the Yamburgan team was sired by Yamburgan Diamantina Z20 (by Weebollabolla Quilpie). The steer had a DWG of 2.03 kg/day, perfect meat colour, fat depth and carcase weight. The other steers in the top performing team were sired by Narralda Aladdin, The Grove New Legend and Yamburgan Sambo. The averages for the Yamburgan steers were very impressive, an average EMA of 80 sq/cm, and average DWG of 1.91 and a ViaScan Salable Meat Yield of 66%. |

We were also placed 5th overall (2.40 kg/day) with a pen of pure bred Yamburgan Shorthorn steers. Pictured above are Nick Manchee receiving the weight gain section of the trials ribbon from Mr Ken Crotty. We were placed first in the MSA Meat Eating section which coupled with the DWG success emphasizes the direction we are taking.
