The Development

The MA Durham Tropical™ breeding program was developed after a central Australian cattleman approached us to breed bulls that had high meat quality, fertility and heat tolerance. We have combined the worlds best Shorthorn and Santa Gertrudis genetics together produce bulls that will suit any Australian environment.

A female base of 100% fertile, high marbling, moderate framed Shorthorn cows were selected and joined to high GeneSTAR tested, muscular, polled, Santa Gertrudis bulls. The result has been an animal that we believe will have a high impact in Australia's semi-arid climate.

Trials through our MA BEEF branded beef have shown no difference between the pure bos taurus and the Durham Tropical for meat quality. The first pen of steers were trialed in the 2010 RNA 100 day feedlot competition with excellent results, 3rd overall for weight gain and 1st in the MSA meat eating quality.

Sires such as Wilgaroon Jester (sire of the Australian record priced bull), Warenda Mexico (one of the highest GeneSTAR tenderness bulls available) who is by Wave Hill Major and both bulls have been used extensively in the S Kidman & Co breeding program.

The Durham Tropical™ Program came about due to our frustration with the bos indicus breeds lack of fertility, temperament problems and a market trend pushing towards higher quality beef. Our goal as beef producers and suppliers of genetics to the industry has always been of meat quality and the eating experience of beef. Without that we don't have an industry or future. Secondly, and most importantly, fertility and weight for age still, and always will be the biggest drivers of a beef cattle herd.

Survivability

Durham Tropical™ cattle are extremely good at utilising all the pasture available to them from an early age.
